Classic Margarita Recipe

Updated: Apr 9

A short and simple guide on how to make a margarita, including one of my best kept secrets.

I decided to choose a margarita as the first cocktail for this blog for one very important reason, it's MY favorite cocktail. Except I rarely order them when I go out because, it is so hard to find a place that makes them just the way I like.

“It's 4:58 on a Friday afternoon. Do you know where your margarita is?" - Amy Neftzger

What's my secret? The answer is simple, fresh squeezed sour mix. If you only take one thing away from reading this post let it be, to stop using store bought cocktails mixes and start squeezing your own juice!

Fresh Squeezed Sour Mix

As someone who has worked with some really talented people, I can say that a lot of mixologists have their own way of making sour mix. However, here is my recipe:

  1. 8 ounces of simple syrup

  2. 8 ounces of fresh squeezed lime juice

  3. 1 ounce of fresh squeezed orange juice

This specific amount is enough to make about five margaritas but, you can always tweak it to make more or less as long as you use equal parts of simple syrup and lime juice, and just a small amount of orange juice.

Now that you know how to make the most important ingredient in margarita, let's make the cocktail! This cocktail can be made with three simple ingredients once you've made your fresh squeezed sour mix so here, we go:

  • 3 ounces of fresh squeezed sour mix

  • 1.5 ounces of tequila

  • .50 ounce of triple sec

Shake all of these ingredients up and strain over fresh ice into a glass with a salted rim (if you like) and garnish with a lime wedge! Trust me once you drink this, you won't think about using ready-made cocktail mixes again.
